Strategies to overcome performance-reducing and destabilising effects of industrial chemicals on anaerobic granules

The research project will investigate the effects of two classes of additives on the anaerobic granules and the resulting consequences for reactor operation. For this purpose, anaerobic plants are operated mesophilically on a laboratory scale and exposed to different inhibitor exposures. After identification of the inhibitor concentrations and the mechanisms leading to a reduction in performance, the research project focuses on the derivation and development of measures to ensure operational stability and optimisation.

The performance of anaerobic sludge bed reactors as well as their operational stability is strongly dependent on the activity of the anaerobic biocoenosis and the condition of the anaerobic granulated biomass. Even slight changes in the substrate composition can have a negative effect on the process and significantly affect the structure, property and composition of the anaerobic granules, which can cause the sludge pellets to disintegrate.

In food production plants, such as breweries and fruit juice production plants, various industrial chemicals, surface-active substances and additives are used for cleaning and disinfection of the production facilities.
