2023/11/27

The 19th International Symposium on Waste Management, Resource Recovery and Sustainable Landfilling (Sardinia Symposium 2023) took place in Sardinia, Italy, from October 9th to 13th, 2023. The Sardinia Symposium 2023 is one of the world's leading symposium on waste and resource management. Over 500 presentations and participants from almost 50 countries discussed practical solutions and challenges for the implementation of sustainable waste management strategies. The SuR team was represented with three presentations.

On the first day, Julian Baehr presented the current EU climate policy framework and requirements in the “Waste management and ecology” session and discussed the extent to which the waste management industry can achieve the goal of climate neutrality by 2050.

In the session “Decision tool in waste management”, Tabea Hagedorn presented the methodology developed in the ReCircE project. The methodology aims at giving waste management practitioners an initial carbon footprint of managing smartphone wastes. The assessment method uses information from the developed digital product lifecycle passport as part of the project.

In the “Waste management case studies” session, Dr. Alice Lopes presented the DigInform Platform, which aims at optimizing exchange of information among stakeholders, supporting the circular economy and the closing of material cycles. The DigInform Platform was developed as part of the DigInform project “Digital information management in the circular economy chain of actors in the manufacturing industry”.

Through an active participation of the SuR team, new contacts with scientists from all over the world were made and valuable feedback on current work was obtained.
