New Project AktivFlock
The chair of Environmental Analytics and Pollutants and BHU-Umwelttechnik are investigating activated flocculation for the combined removal of turbidity and pollutants
2021/06/21
Duration: 1.4.2021 – 31.7.2023

The project partners of AktivFlock develop an innovative method of flocculation combining Fe(II) with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The reaction of H2O2 with Fe(II) leads to the formation of Fe(III) and highly reactive hydroxyl radicals. The Fe(III) precipitates as hydroxide and initiates the flocculation process, while the formed hydroxyl radicals can react with dissolved components of the water to be treated. These oxidation reactions lead to polymerization of the organic material, which increases the average molecular mass and also makes dissolved parts of the organic material flocculable. In addition, other treatment objectives can be achieved, such as the degradation of micro-pollutants, decolorization, and removal of phosphate by precipitation using Fe(II). This significantly expands the potential applications of iron flocculation.
This project is funded by the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations (AIF) – Central Innovation Programme for small and medium-sized enterprises (ZIM).
