The Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) management remains nowadays, one of the major problems in developing countries. Currently, the MSW treatment in many of these countries consists mainly of an “all in one bin system” collection with a direct landfilling without pretreatment of the waste. Therefore, the waste management concepts in this countries are mostly far away from circular economy.
As part of the Trans4Biotec project, both African countries Morocco and Côte d’Ivoire will be the focus of investigations on how to improve the current municipal solid waste treatments with a view to sustainable waste management. The actual status of the waste management is analyzed and subsequently, optimization potentials will be discussed by means of interviews with experts on the field as well as workshops with waste management stakeholders.
Furthermore, the biological municipal waste and landfill leachate of both developing countries will be investigated on whether or not they are suitable for an anaerobic treatment, in order to produce bio-based products.
On the basis of the studies carried out on waste management and on the suitability of biological waste, recommendations for the optimization of the existing waste management systems of the participating African Cities and Districts will be formulated.
In parallel with the already mentioned research activities, the training of Moroccan and Ivorian master and doctoral students in the field of waste management is an integral part of this project. The aim is to accomplish a stabilization of the achieved project results.
