The outstanding paper “Determination of free chlorine based on ion chromatography – application of glycine as a selective scavenger” by Sajjad Abdi was distinguished by being published as a paper in the Forefront of ABC.

Chlorination is the most common form of water treatment worldwide. Free available chlorine (FAC) refers to the amount of chlorine present in water as hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite ions. In this research, a new method for measurement of FAC by ion chromatography is developed. This allows the incorporation of FAC measurements into standard IC methods for simultaneous measurement alongside other anions. Since this method uses glycine to selectively scavenge free chlorine and form N-Chloroglycine, it is very useful for the measurement of free chlorine in the presence of other oxidants. The combination of the selectivity of N-Chloroglycine formation and chromatographic separation provides an automated method with low potential of interferences.
